What is BayCon?

BayCon is the annual meeting of the BayNet Amateur Radio Club in the San Francisco Bay Area.  It's also our annual fund raiser.
BayNet provides a multi-site open repeater network covering the Bay Area from two high radio sites.  The sites are linked full time providing wide area coverage on our conventional FM repeater system.  We also host a DMR repeater and talkgroup, a Fusion repeater and room as well as a D-STAR repeater.
Bay-Net's primary served agency is the American Red Cross.  We provide wide area emergency communications infrastructure in times of disaster and for various public service group events.
The equipment is bought and paid for by the generous donations from a few club members, however, our annual operating expenses are more than $2,000 to pay for radio site rental, insurance, and maintenance.  BayNet is open to all radio amateurs and we don't take dues.  That means that BayCon is the one and only way we generate our operating funds.  Please buy as many tickets to the drawing as you can to help fund our efforts.  If you would like a tax deduction, you can also make a donation.  BayNet is a 501(c)3 educational organization.
Thank you !

Registration and Attending BayCon

On the day of the event, we will live stream all the presentations on YouTube.  You can watch for free.
If you would like to financially support BayNet and have a chance to win one of the great opportunity drawing prizes, you will need to register and buy one or more tickets.  The more tickets you buy, the better the odds of winning !

10:15     Kyle AA0Z
Intro to Node Red - Build a Dashboard & Control Web Page For Your Shack
  • This presentation is an intro to the world of Node Red and all the useful information, control and automation it can perform in your ham shack with the equipment you already own.
  • Node Red is a flow based programming language that anybody can easily learn by connecting pre-programmed nodes together to form flows.  No programming experience is required.
  • Many popular ham radio devices have flows already programmed by the ham radio community so loading and tweaking is all you need to accomplish to get up and running quickly.
  • Kyle was licensed in 1995 as KBØRPM and previously held NØKTK.  He was a past president of the St. Louis & Suburban Radio Club and also the past website committee chair.  Currently he is the interim chair for the club's engineering committee and helps maintain 7 repeater sites around the St. Louis area.  Kyle enjoys operating portable and expedition style in contests, but loves a good multi-op also.  He is currently a member of the ARRL, St. Louis & Suburban Radio Club, Society of Midwest Contesters, Elayer Contest Club, Mississippi Valley DX & Contest Club and Long Island CW Club.  When not on the radio, he likes to play tennis, play the piano, make ham radio YouTube videos and geek out on the latest technology.  Kyle works in IT for his day job.
11:15    Mark N6MTS - An Appliance For Operating FM Satellites
  • Operating FM Amateur Satellites is within reach of most hams, but there is a bit of hacking-together of equipment involved to do it easily. There hasn't been any convenient Appliance one could buy, optimized for operating satellites.  Here, I discuss what features such a device would have, and present the "Secret Squirrel" project I've been working on, SOAR: Satellite Optimized Amateur Radio.
  • Mark "Smitty Halibut" Smith has been a ham since 1992, active in the Making and Problem Solving aspects of Ham Radio. He's a sometimes-host of the Ham Radio Workbench Podcast, and has his own YouTube channel. He recently left his long time career in IT to start Halibut Electronics: designing, manufacturing, and selling amateur radio, and audiophile, electronics products. Find him on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/SmittyHalibut
12:00   Break - 15 minutes
12:15    Vince VE6LK Go-Kit Building: Design Considerations
  • Take a peek at the wide variety of purposes for a Go-Kit and explore Vince's purpose and kit. Take ideas for your own kit build!

12:55     Marcel AI6MS Radio Propagation Mapping
  • Learn the basics about radio propagation mapping and how you can use this to plot out your local repeater coverage or next AREDN link. We'll demo two free online tools to get you started: Ubiquiti airLink and Radio Mobile Online by VE2DBE.
  • Marcel is an Electrical Engineer from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who enjoys supporting student clubs and fully-remote licensing. He also helps with local events, ARES, and repeater groups as an RF consultant and volunteer tower climber! More details at: https://www.qrz.com/db/AI6MS
